1st Kings Hill Girls Brigade

Kings Hill is a development in Kent on an old airfield site which has grown substantially in the last 10 years.

I have lived on Kings Hill for 12 years and have always been very aware of the lack of activities for the youth in the area. During this time I was Captain of 1st Maidstone and very happy in my work.

Over the last few years things have changed in my life and it was time to move on and I sadly left Girls Brigade.

Having been to my old companies display and presented a Gold DEA Award,

I listened to the visiting officer’s comments (Our previous minister’s wife Anne Thorpe) a very important point hit home to me as to the reason why I did Girls Brigade ‘To encourage Girls to get the Enjoyment Fellowship and Fun ‘Just as I did when I was a girl.

I soon began to realise my work in GB would resume very quickly. As 4 months later I was asked if I’d like to be involved in the discussions on setting up a company in Kings Hill (I agreed to this making it very clear it was only to discuss the possibility).

I found my self doing a lot of research and entering into discussions with one of the local Churches and, the local schools even to the point of talking at two school assemblies in June to see what interest we would get. By this time I had my old fire back and wanted to give the girls on Kings Hill a GB company where they could get the encouragement I had for many years as a girl in GB.

After the assemblies I sent home letters to the girls at both schools to see what interest there was and I got back about 40 slips and so I began organising an open evening for July where with help from the Mid Kent District we had 30 girls come along for the taster session. All of these girls seemed to enjoy themselves, During this evening they were given the opportunity to sign up for a NEW Girls Brigade Company that would start on 11th Sept 2006 We had 28 girls sign up straight away .

By July I had 7 helpers two of which were already officers who had been in Girls brigade as girls before and the others Mum themselves.

Over the summer we had our 1st staff meeting which was really good and we were able to plan for our 1st Session and further with lots of ideas for Christmas and the New Year.

Our Company opened its doors for the first time on 11th Sept 2006 with 17 Explorers and 16 Juniors. After the first 3 weeks this increased to 20 Explorers and Juniors remained the same.

We held our 1st Church Parade on 1st Oct that was supported by most of the girls and parents which meant the congregation was trebled in size.

We took 13 Juniors to the District Junior day in October where they had a wonderful afternoon.

Our Christmas activities include an open evening, carol singing and a party.

Who knows what next year will bring but our planning has started. We have booked our weekend camp at Holcot during June and look forward to taking at least 14 girls away with us. We hope and pray we are able to start up a Senior section with some of our older Juniors. The rest I leave in Gods hands as I really do believe he had planned the timing of this company to start on Kings Hill.

Having had times in my life when I have felt God has not been there for me. He really has shown me over the last few months where and what his plan for me are. I hope he continues to work in this wonderful way to help GB Grow in the future.

If anyone feels they are called to start a new company and need an ear or have questions please do contact me
